Jolly Rogers Revolution

about

A song about Cuba. I was reading The Red Umbrella around the time that my great grandfather gave me my first guitar. Him and I didn't speak much, when I got old enough to hold conversations with adults he fell victim to alzheimer's disease. I would speak to my grandmother and ask her about her father back in Cuba. She would tell me that he would the very guitar he gave me and that he always bring a kind word or make the people of his town laugh with his music. My great grandpa was an honest man, I once asked him if he joined the military in Cuba and he went on a rant about the situation with Fidel Castro. Castro, as you might know is the communist leader of Cuba, who's been around since 1959. Living in America throughout most of my life, I never experienced that sort of tyranny in my life, but I've felt it through my great grandfathers presence. He lived a good long life, so I wrote a quick short song about freedom, because we need it now, and we need it fast!

I highly recommend reading "The Red Umbrella" by Christina Diaz Gonzalez. It is a story of a young cuban girl in the early 1960's at the time when Fidel was gaining power and the fall of a beautiful country.

lyrics

And I saw the axes of our fathers by the sea
The sea that sank all the ships of thieves and burgalry
And deep down above the ground the sea's like you and me
All we know and all we are are human being free

And we all set sail on the big revolution and we choose to stay away from greed
So come aboard if you want to leave come with me and we'll both be free
And we all set sail on the big revolution and we choose to stay away from greed
So come aboard if you want to leave come with me and we'll both be free
